I'm soldering some electronic components,when using a clump of solder paste, why don't it short out IC pins?

Reflow soldering depends on the surface tension of the melted solder and the repelling action of the solder mask printed onto the PCB.


You can blurt a clump of solder paste across all the pins of an SMD device, and on heating it will run away from the masked portions of the pattern and form neat fillets around the materials it readily associates with. This occurs because the solder forms unstable balls where it’s sitting on the mask and runs until it integrates with a forming trace/lead joint.
